The World's Most Innovative Companies

BUSINESSWEEK Magazine has published its list of the world’s 50 most innovative companies in its issue dated April 28, 2008.

The list has been compiled by the US financial publication in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group.

The 50 companies are distributed, countrywise, as follows:

USA 31
Britain 4
Germany 4
Japan 4
India 2
Canada 1
Finland 1
Netherlands 1
Singapore 1
South Korea 1
Total: 50

The two Indian industrial groups, included for the first time, are the Tatas and the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Group. The Tata group is ranked 6th and Reliance 19th.

The Tata group ranks well above IBM, BMW, Honda Motor, General Motors, Boeing, Audi and Daimler.

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance ranks above companies like Boeing, Exxon and BP.

The most interesting thing is that not a single Chinese company is considered innovative enough to make it to the list.

The list of companies ranked in order are

1. APPLE
2. GOOGLE
3. TOYOTA MOTOR
4. GENERAL ELECTRIC
5. MICROSOFT
6.TATA GROUP

Last night on BBC world News there was a story about how China is literally building up the entire country of Congo in return for its immense mineral wealth of copper and Cobalt. What was sad about this was that, once again, the people of Congo were not involved in this decsion; and good as it looks because the Chinese are building Railways, Schools, Hospitals all over the country, it is probably a highly corrupt deal involving only a handful of people of Congo.

But this kind of plundering of resources is nothing new to Africa. The Europeans did it for centuries and now the Chinese are doing it; but they are saying they are building a lot of good things in return. We shall see...

Ram,

There you go!!!!! U.S is still the most innovative company in the world. That's why many young people over the world like to migrate to America. The opportunities I received in the U.S and how far I had come as an IT and Management Consultant in the 80s and the 90s could never have been offered to me in that day and age in India. Most likely not even today, because it is a male-dominated society. That's why, like most women, I am gung-ho on America.

I am not surprised that only two Indian companies made the list, and not even one Chinese company made it either. Asian countries, by far and large, have been known to be copycats, not innovators. On the other hand, in America we have the 'can do' positive attitude. Americans don't like to 'pirate' someone else's ideas. They like to come up with their own. Then again, so what if five years from now India has ten more companies added to this list? Does it mean that women will be on the board of directors of these companies? Aside from the corporate world, women are still not treated well in India. Also, will the poor then have a stake in India’s future?

So what if China had ten companies on the innovative companies list, if human rights issues in that country are not discussed, and labor is not treated well?

Wealth of a country should not only be judged by its trade or bank balances, but by the freedom its people enjoy, and if they are treated with dignity. Meanwhile, I hope every country in the world concentrates in being innovative. This will keep them busy at home and away from indulging in wars.
